Welcome To Financial Literacy And Resilence Education (FLARE)!
Register for the FLARE lectures!
FLARE was created by Dr. Jimmy Turner (a triple Deac!) for the MS4 students at Wake Forest in 2020 to help improve financial literacy due to the impact that the stresses of personal finance can have on overall physician wellness.
Tuesdays at 12pm (Noon)
Upcoming Live Lectures
Why Doctors Should Care About Money /w Dr. Jimmy Turner
In this lecture, Jimmy will discuss the “Why” behind personal finance. In the upcoming weeks, we will then disuss the “what” and the “how.”
Asset Protection /w Dr. Jimmy Turner
In this lecture, we will take a deep dive into one of the most important topics in personal finance for physicians – Asset Protection. We will discuss life insurance and disability insurance and more.
Cash Flow and Budgeting w/ Dr. Megan Ringle
There is a saying in personal finance, “Cash Flow is King.” Without cashflow, none of the remainder of the education in FLARE matters. In this lecture, Dr. Ringle will discuss the lifeblood of personal finance.
Investing 101 w/ Dr. Megan Ringle
Now that you have learned about cashflow, we can start talking about what to do with it. From stocks and bonds to index funds and target date investing, this lecture will lay the foundation for your investing knowledge.
Investing 202 w/ Dr. Jimmy Turner
With a foundation in investing, we can now discuss how to determine how much you need to save to get to financial independence (the point at which you no longer require a paycheck to live your life).
Working with the Financial Industry w/ Dr. Jimmy Turner
Whether you realize it or not, as a physician, you are a gazelle amongst a bunch of lions. In this lecture, we talk about how to find a good financial advisor, the conflicts of insurance agents, and how to get the help you need.
Student Loan Primer with Dr. Lisha Taylor
In this lecture, Dr. Taylor – my co-host on the Money Meets Medicine podast – will lay the foundation for your knowledge in student loans. After this, you’ll better understand the “why & what” of student loans.
Public Service Loan Forgiveness w/ Dr. Lisha Taylor
Student loans can be really confusing, particularly when it comes to PSLF. In this lecture, Dr. Taylor will simplify PSLF as she discusses the in’s and out’s of how to think through the right repayment program for you.
Attending Physician Finance Panel
In this lecture, we will have attending physicians from a variety of specialities answer your questions from their experience. This is a great lecture to get a variety of perspectives.
Money and Mindset w/ Dr. Jimmy Turner
Once you know the “what” and the “how”, you’d think that is all you need to know about money. However, “Personal finance is 20% math, and 80% psychology.” This may be the most important lecture in FLARE.
